Historic Gardens and Natural Heritage Sites in Ontario

National Historic Sites include many historic gardens and sites of natural heritage. These range from carefully designed and tended formal gardens to remnants of historic landscapes to extensive natural settings and aboriginal habitations. The following list does not include battle sites that may also include extensive landscape features.

Historic Gardens Project

Following a workshop on historic gardens sponsored by NHSAO and held at Parkwood in March 2011, participants expressed a desire to keep in touch, expand their numbers, and plan future projects to enhance Ontario’s historic gardens and reach a broader audience. Thus was born the Historic Gardens Project.

The Group includes publicly and privately owned national historic sites, other sites with heritage landscapes, as well as experts in the field and others wishing to promote Ontario's rich garden heritage.

The next step is a Showcase of Ontario’s Historic Gardens. About 30 sites have already expressed an interest in participating in such a showcase. A Steering Committee has been formed and a grant has been received from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.  The Steering Committee reflects diverse perspectives and is comprised of  representatives from Parkwood and several other national historic sites, a garden writer, a representative from the newly created Regional Tourism Organizations (RTO), the president of Attractions Ontario, and the president of Ontario Master Gardiners. Others are being approached to join.

If you want more information or would like to participate in the Showcase, please contact the NHSAO’s Coordinator.  And check back here from time to time as planning moves into action.
